Genomic presentation
Genomics/Epigenetics Presentation
Choose from the list of topics below by responding to the thread I have started, titled ‘select your topic’. Please put your topic in the subject line. This is not a group assignment. However, two students can choose the same topic and work on it independently, and post independently. Once a topic has been selected by two students, it is no longer available. First come, first serve. If you have a topic that has applications in the realm of genomics / epigenetics that is not listed, please feel free to address that, but email or call Jennifer for approval. Be sure to review the rubric in Appendix C carefully.
Genomics / Epigentics topics
- Alcohol use disorder
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Autism
- Crohn’s Disease
- Schizophrenia
- Familial hypercholesterolemia
- Bipolar disorder
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
- Breast cancer
- Metabolic Syndrome
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Asthma
- Osteoporosis
- Neural tube defects
- Eczema
After your presentation is completed, please post in this forum by starting a new thread. Please title your thread with the alteration you are addressing.
Appendix C: Genomics Presentation
Choose one of the topics/health alterations listed in the discussion area. Most are of multi factorial inheritance, as these are alterations that are particularly amenable to nursing intervention. If you have topic/health alteration you wish to address (that is not listed), please email me.
For more guidance and an incomplete example, please go to the “Assignment Guidance and Templates” folder.
Substantive additions – It is the expectation that students read all initial posts in the discussion forum. Each student is to post two responses, each to different peer adhering to the rubric.
Genomics Rubric
Criteria – presentation |
Excellent |
Developing |
Not Satisfactory |
1: Succinct description of the health alteration. |
Summarizes essential information clearly. Well structured, logical. (4 points) |
Essential information is not complete. Too much or too little information. Organization in sporadic (2 points) |
Inaccurate. Lacks structure or flow. Difficult to follow. Too much or too little information (0 points) |
2. Genomic considerations |
Genomic factors addressed. Includes nursing assessment, screening, prevalence, and factors that increase likelihood of disease expression. (8 points) |
Addresses fewer than four of the following: nursing assessment; screening; prevalence; factors that increase likelihood of disease expression (4 points) |
Addresses fewer than three of the following: nursing assessment; screening; prevalence; factors that increase likelihood of disease expression (0 points) |
3.Ethics |
Ethical aspects specific to genomics are examined. (6 points) |
One provision from the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements is examined as they relate to genomics. Makes meaningful connections. (3 points) |
Meaningful connections lacking (0 points) |
4. Application to nursing practice |
What can nursing do to mitigate risk of health alteration expression? If interventions include teaching, explanation is understandable and relevant for someone with a high school education, but no background in health care (6 points) |
Application to nursing practice is limited. Teaching challenging for lay person to understand. (3 points) |
Application to nursing practice limited (0 points) |
5. Evidence based |
Accesses and uses two professional evidence-based sources (other than required text book). Formats, cites, and documents a reference list for resources used with minimal APA formatting errors. Presentation grounded in evidence (3 points) |
Accesses, cites, and references fewer than two professional evidence-based sources (other than required textbook). Strength of evidence questionable. |
Evidence is limited (0 points) |
6. Presentation and organization |
Organization is clear, logical, and engaging. |
Less than 12 slides. Clarity is lacking. (1.5 points) |
Presentation difficult to follow. (0 points) |
